The Athenaeum of Philadelphia is a treasure trove of knowledge and culture! Founded in 1814, it’s a special collections library and museum that dazzles with its Italianate architecture and brownstone charm. It’s a place where history and the arts converge, housing an incredible collection of architecture and interior design history. Imagine walking through its doors and being surrounded by 180,000 drawings, over 350,000 photographs, and manuscripts from about 1,000 American architects. It’s not just a building; it’s a celebration of American creativity and heritage right in the heart of Society Hill!

An 1840s brownstone &, National Historic Landmark designed by architect John Notman, it boasts one of Philadelphia’s finest 19th century interiors as well as a research collection dedicated to architecture and interior design. Visitors have access to research & collections of books, architectural drawings, photographs and manuscripts representing the work of more than 2,000 American architects and firms.

I'm an artist and have used their digital scanning service. The work is placed face up on a large (4'x8') bed with a vacuum surface that keeps the work flat while it slowly rolls underneath a wide format camera. They give you your scan on a disc and save a backup. This is great for some type of artwork. Some adjustments in Photoshop are needed. A scan costs $100 but you can scan multiple images in one scan and if you join their organization you receive 25% off. Great for some art but not necessarily for everything.

Beautiful library! Much of the furniture is originally from the 1800s. The staff is knowledgeable. It is a hidden gem off Washington Square.

This is an active library! It's driven by its members, which its elite/affluent roots also worked to drive. Visiting it is free, and there are a lot of curious and wondrous artifacts throughout the place.
